What is Software as a Service (SaaS)?

The traditional way businesses get software applications starts with the the capital purchase of servers. Then they build a datacenter to put the server hardware into (or host the servers). They then must ensure that they have the right firmware, hardware, and operation system versions, and the redundant capacity to grow the solution. Then they buy some additional servers for testing, training, and disaster recovery environments. We can not forget the need to buy development platforms and test tools. Finally they either buy or build custom software. This can be very expensive and requires constant maintenance and upgrades. The traditional approach can have a very long time to business value, and also has an high failure rate.

So how is SaaS different?

Software as a Service does not require you to buy or host any hardware; the hardware resides in a public, multi-tenancy cloud. Many SaaS solutions provide you with the testing, training, and disaster recovery capabilities as part of the service. There is also no operating systems, software upgrades, or capacity issues to manage. With a SaaS solution, you pay for the solution based on the number of resources that you consume and you can quickly scale up or down as your business needs change. It is an on-demand computing model much like electricity is an on-demand electricity usage model.
